Things I Stopped Doing As a Mom (And Nothing Fell Apart)
At some point, I realized I was doing a lot… and still feeling like it was not enough.
The house was not perfect. Work was not perfect. Parenting definitely was not perfect.
So I started experimenting. Not with doing more. But with doing less. Here are the things I stopped doing as a mom.
1. I Stopped Keeping the House “Company Ready”
There was a time when I felt like the house needed to look presentable at all times.
Spoiler: no one was coming over.
Now? The house is clean enough to function, not to impress.
There are toys. There is laundry. There are days when the couch has crumbs.
And somehow… we are all still alive and fine.
2. I Stopped Folding Laundry Perfectly
This one felt illegal at first.
Matching, folding, stacking everything just right.
Now? I fold what matters. The rest gets tossed into drawers in a way that would probably offend my past self.
The result? Less time folding. More time doing literally anything else.
No one has complained. Not once.
3. I Stopped Saying Yes to Everything
Every activity. Every plan. Every “we should do this.”
I used to feel like saying no meant I was missing out or not doing enough.
Now I say no more often than yes. And guess what? Life got calmer. Not smaller. Just calmer.
4. I Stopped Feeling Guilty for Sitting Down
This one is big.
Even when I had a minute, I felt like I should be doing something productive. Now, if I sit, I sit. No multitasking. No pretending I am about to get up in a second. Just a break. Turns out, the world does not collapse when I rest for 10 minutes.
What Actually Happened ...
- The house is still standing.
- My kid is fine.
- Work still never gets done completely.
But I am less overwhelmed. Less rushed. Less exhausted.
We carry a lot as moms. Most of it is invisible.
But not all of it is necessary.
