I’m Making Storage Under the Stairs

under the stairs storage drawers

I am in the process of making some extra storage in my basement. I decided to convert the empty space under the stairs into a storage. The drawers are based on a video I found online. The first one appears to be pretty sturdy so far, so I really hope after I finish all of them they hold up.

Building these storage drawers under the stairs have fun and rewarding project because I really enjoy working with wood. I did purchase a couple of power tools, which made this project easier - an impact driver and a hand circular saw.

My stairs are a different size than the online tutorial so I had to adjust the drawer sizes to fit my specifications. I did, however choose the same shape and I used the same the materials for the bottom and sides. The hardware I used was VIVEGO 1 Pair 30 Inch 260 Lb Capacity Heavy Duty Drawer Slides.

Because building these storage drawers does require some carpentry skills and tools, I had to do quite a bit of research. I also had to get comfortable using a circular saw (kind of scary how it cuts wood like it's butter), impact driver, and a few other basic tools. Measuring things properly was the biggest challenge. If these drawers fall apart, I'm pretty certain it would be because I did not take proper measurements. I'll keep you guys posted.

Regarding the drawer slides, I chose the VIVEGO 1 Pair 30 Inch 260 Lb Capacity Heavy Duty Drawer Slides with Screws because they are designed to support up to 260 lbs and I thought some of these drawers I'm making will definitely carry a lot of weight.

One of the standout features of these drawer slides is their smooth operation. Thanks to high-quality ball bearings, the drawers glide in and out with ease, even when carrying heavy loads. Additionally, the slides feature a lock-out mechanism that keeps the drawers securely in place when fully extended.

Installation of the first one was relatively straightforward. The included screws seemed short and tiny, so I replaced a couple of them on teach side with longer screws. Attaching the slides to the drawers was a bit difficult for one person as they are quite heavy. However, I did use a few pieces of scrap wood and shims to support the drawer while attaching it to the sliders.

I think these drawer slides will work out well for my under stair drawers, but I guess, only time will tell. I'll post un update soon.
